For this weeks edition of the Lunch Break Interview Series, I interviewed Shayna from Wall Garnish. I met Shayna several years ago and have loved following her life ever since! She is kind and has a sweet spirit.
Shayna is married and a mom of two. She has a six year old girl and a one year old boy!
“My husband and kids are really my first priority, so a lot of what I do is to take care of them. ” – Shayna
Shayna and her husband Adam, decided to start their own business. It started with NM Graphix, where they do large format printing for businesses and events. NM Graphix makes banners, stickers, signage, etc.
“One day, after being stuck inside of my house with a newborn baby for weeks. I needed to get my creative juices going… (That mixed with looking up nurseries all day), I decided to start my very own company, Wall Garnish. At Wall Garnish, we sell peel and stick, removable wallpaper. We have been open for a year now, and I am having so much fun building this brand!” – Shayna
How did you and your husband start NM Graphix?
NM Graphix is mostly because of my husband. My husband’s background is in computer design and he really has an entrepreneurial mindset. Ever since I met him, he has wanted to start his own business. This was his way of achieving that with his talents and passions. After we had our son, I was at home all day, which was an adjustment for me from always working and being outside of the house. I started feeling like I wanted to start a project, something that was just mine to work on. From there we started Wall Garnish. So, we have 2 businesses under one roof that we both help each other with. It’s fun for us to work together.
What has been your favorite thing about working with your husband?
It’s been fun to create goals and go after them together. It gives us something that we can achieve together. We are total opposites in so many ways and we balance each other out and we are able to teach each other new things.
What has been your favorite thing about being your own boss?
We get to do what we enjoy everyday and we have really fallen in love with the process of building our business. Learning how this whole entrepreneur thing works has been such a fun challenge for us. Of course, it’s scary and not always fun, there are days where it is difficult but that just comes with the territory. We have grown so much and learned about each other and ourselves I’m so thankful that Adam brought me out of my comfort zone and encouraged us to start this, I am very excited for the future.
How do you keep your family as your first priority while running your own small business?
Being a Mom is so crazy, you wear so many different hats and play so many different roles. I would be lying if I said it’s been easy to find “balance”, but the truth is, there is no balance. When we first started our business, NM Graphix, I was so excited and I tried to give it my all. I found that was not for my family. The more I gave to our business, the more I got frustrated and my family suffered. I just felt God wanting me to make my family my number one right now. As my little one gets older, it gets easier to work more and get help from family. So, I work at home and go to our shop a couple days a week while Adam does most of the work at our shop. I have 2 kids that need my time now more than they ever will and I don’t want to miss out on this time with them. I love our business so much and I am excited for the day that I can do that full time. However, when that day comes, I’ll also be so sad that I don’t have my kids at me feet all day wanting my attention.
How has God helped you during this season of your life with your business and children?
My relationship with God has grown so much! I find that through these times of growth, I have relied on God’s word much more. Since January, I have found a common thread in all of my Bible time and sermons. He has really been teaching self-discipline, in all areas of my life. Whether it is for finances, marriage, motherhood or business, self-discipline is ultimately the underlying message I have been really working on and it has made such a difference in my life.
What is the hardest thing you have gone through during this new adventure?
This new adventure has really strengthened our patience, we have had to learn to have confidence in ourselves and the process of hard work, knowing that nothing is great happens overnight. Starting a business from the ground up comes with so many difficulties. Some days you feel like you have it all together and you’re doing it all right and some days you feel defeated. What has helped us is to stop comparing our lives to others.
With social media these days, it’s easy to get caught up. I will look at other people’s business, or moms, or marriages and start comparing myself. What we have been learning is, God has a different plan and time for everyone, and the moment we try to do things the way someone else would instead of how God wants us to, we are doing it wrong. We want to live out our life, not someone else’s, at the end of our life, we want to be proud of the life we built. Our children, our business, our marriage- we want these things to last and have strong foundations. That doesn’t happen overnight and it requires us to be very intentional about what we are doing.
I admire your response! How do you keep social media from interfering with your mindset? How does God help you to refocus?
It’s all about staying in Gods word, finding friends that encourage you in that area and staying positive. Hard days are bound to happen to anyone so if you have that foundation it makes it so much easier to get through. Having friendships that encourage you to stay in God’s word and call you out when you need to be redirected is such a game changer.
Congratulations on being open for a year! Do you have any goals for the upcoming fall and winter season?
Thank you so much! Yes, we have a few collaborations in the works right now that we are super excited for. Most of the things that we have planned we can’t really talk about until it happens but we are so excited for the Fall and Winter! Overall, growing Wall Garnish is a big priority for me.
How exciting! Has it been hard to get collaborations going?
Collaborations aren’t too hard to get going, there’s so many people out there who have been amazing and really helped us grow. What I have learned this past year is the kind of people I want to collaborate with. We have learned so much about our audience and consumer this past year so I think we are getting better at choosing whom to collaborate with.
I’m so excited for your future as well! Do you have advice for anyone starting a new business with their spouse?
yes! I would say to set aside time to talk work and time to say, “nope we aren’t talking about work right now, this is family time”. It’s easy to come home, eat dinner together and go to bed talking all about what we need to be doing but it can start to get draining. At the end of the day, we try to have a few hours of family time where we just hang out with the kids and play without work talk.
I had a great time interviewing Shayna! I loved learning about her business and hearing her honesty. I know how hard it is to start a business from scratch and Shayna is doing wonderfully! She has so many beautiful pieces in her shop and is continuously adding more! Her heart for God is great to see and it’s sweet to learn about her family. It’s not easy to work side by side with your spouse, nor is it easy to start a business. Shayna and Adam are doing something most people are afraid of. I admire that.
